Libre Graphics Meeting 2010 in Brussels
Cutting edge graphics software meets free culture at Libre Graphics Meeting 2010
Users and developers of Free, Libre and Open Source graphics software will meet in Brussels, Belgium on May 26-29, 2010 at the fifth annual Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM). Held in a historical piano factory, newly renovated into a lively exhibition and work space near Brussels' city center, LGM 2010 offers software developers, artists, designers and other graphics professionals the chance to collaborate and learn from each other. LGM emphasizes the sharing of collective creativity, innovation and ideas and is free for everyone to attend. The LGM community is excited for the opportunity to bring this event to the European capital.
About the Libre Graphics Meeting
The Libre Graphics Meeting exists to unite and accelerate the efforts behind Free, Libre and Open Source creative software. Since 2006, this annual meeting is the premiere conference for developers, users and supporters of projects such as GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Krita, Scribus, Hugin, the Open Clipart Library, and the Open Font Library gather to work on interoperability, shared standards, and new ideas. Work at prior LGMs has pushed the state of the art in important areas such as color management, cross-application sharing of assets, and common formats.
Face-to-face meetings and opportunities for collaboration are important to users and developers alike; in the form of tutorials, talks, workshops, and birds-of-a-feather (BOF) the event offers many formal and informal opportunities to interact.
Highlights from LGM 2009
The last Libre Graphics Meeting took place in Montreal, Canada. It involved 150+ participants from around the world working together for four days to give presentations, demos, and meet informally. Through support from the École Polytechnique Montréal, the LGM user community (raising money on pledgie.com), Sourceforge, River Valley Technologies, Intel Communities, OpenCandy, QT, sK1, GIMP, Python Software Foundation, Gnome foundation and Group Eyrolles, the conference funded travel for many international developers whom otherwise would not be able to work face to face. Highlights included contributions by companies building on Open Source such as AscenderCorp and Open Source Publishing, and presentations of PiTiVi Video Editor by Jean-François Fortin Tam, Fontmatrix, Phatch and Michael Terry’s work on ingimp user-experience analysis and kinetic templates. All major projects in attendance, Scribus, Gimp, Inkscape, and Open Font Library, spent time planning activities for the next year. New projects like the GPU based panorama stitcher nona-gpu, Lighttwist, a system for running multi-projector immersive video displays, and Markus Weiland's FacetZoom widget, set the stage for new exciting software developments leading into LGM 2010 in Brussels.
A preview of LGM 2010
For Libre Graphics Meeting 2010, the conference promoters challenge all participating projects and people to set goals and plan creative projects. First, each major project is requested to have set three solid priorities before the conference to work towards. Second, one or more collaborative projects is to be developed, beyond just the tools used, such as a book or animation. And third, the conference hopes to involve an increasing number of artists and academics to show novel uses libre graphics software, and to discuss, analyse and provide inspiration.
In the coming months, Libre Graphics Meeting 2010 organizers will release more information about the upcoming conference, raising funds to enable the event, and release the official call for participation for 2010. Les utilisateurs et développeurs des Logiciels Libres et Open Source se rencontreront à Bruxelles, Belgique du 26 au 29 mai 2010 durant la cinquième rencontre annuelle du Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM). La rencontre se tiendra dans une ancienne fabrique de pianos, fraîchement rénovée, convertie en un espace de travail et lieu d'exposition vivant, près du centre de Bruxelles. LGM 2010 offre aux développeurs, aux artistes, aux designers et aux autres professionnels de la chaîne graphique la chance de collaborer et d'apprendre les uns des autres. LGM met l'accent sur le partage de la créativité collective, l'innovation et les idées, tout le monde peut y participer gratuitement. La communauté LGM est très enthousiaste à l'idée d'organiser cet événement dans la capitale européenne.
A propos du Libre Graphics Meeting
Ces rencontres ont été créées pour coordonner, unifier et accélérer les efforts consentis pour faire évoluer les logiciels libres et open source destinés à la création graphique. Ces rencontres annuelles se sont imposées depuis leur première édition en 2006 comme le rendez-vous des développeurs, utilisateurs et porteurs de projets tels que GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Krita, Scribus, Hugin, le Open Clipart Library, et le Open Font Library. La vision qui s'y développe est particulièrement orientée vers la formation, les innovations et l'application de standards communs. Les travaux résultant des premières LGMs ont considérablement fait progresser des secteurs essentiels comme la gestion de la colorimétrie, le partage inter-applications des acquis et les formats communs.
Les rencontres et les opportunités de collaborations sont riches et nécessaires pour les utilisateurs et développeurs : les LGMs offrent une multitude d'occasions formelles ou non d'interagir, à travers des ateliers, des entretiens, des travaux dirigés, des discussions ouvertes et des fêtes!
Moments forts de LGM 2009
Le dernier Libre Graphics Meeting s'est tenu à Montréal, Canada. Plus de 150 participants du monde entier s'y sont retrouvés pour travailler ensemble pendant quatre jours. Ils ont donné des présentations, fait des démos et se sont rencontrés de manière informelle. Grâce au soutien de l'École Polytechnique de Montréal, de la communauté des utilisateurs LGM (qui a collecté des fonds sur pledgie.com), de Sourceforge, de River Valley Technologies, d'Intel Communities, d'Open Candy, de QT, sK1, GIMP, Python Software Foundation, Gnome foundation et du Groupe Eyrolles, la conférence a pu payer les déplacements de beaucoup de développeurs internationaux qui, autrement, n'auraient pas pu se rencontrer physiquement pour travailler face-à-face.
Parmi les moments forts de cette édition, on retiendra par exemple les contributions de compagnies et associations comme AscenderCorp et Open Source Publishing qui produisent leurs travaux grâce aux logiciels libres, les présentations du PiTiVi Video Editor de Jeff Fortin, FontMatrix, Phatch et du travail de Michael Terry sur In-Gimp, une analyse de l'expérience utilisateur et des templates kinétiques. Les projets de logiciels libres confirmés comme Scribus, Gimp, Inkscape, et Open Font Library ont pris le temps nécessaire pour planifier et coordonner leurs activités pour l'année suivante. De nouveaux projets comme le panorama stitcher NONA, Lighttwist, un système pour piloter des projections videos immersives avec plusieurs projecteurs et le widget FacetZoom de Markus Weiland ont planté le décor pour de nouveaux développements qui mèneront à l'édition bruxelloise de LGM en 2010.
Un avant-goût de LGM 2010
Pour le Libre Graphics Meeting 2010, les organisateurs de la conférence demandent aux projets et aux personnes qui désirent participer d'établir des objectifs ainsi qu'un calendrier pour des projets créatifs. À chaque projet majeur, il est demandé de fixer trois priorités de travail avant la conférence. Ensuite, les organisateurs de la conférence veulent susciter le développement d'un ou plusieurs projets collaboratifs (et non seulement au niveau des outils), comme un livre ou une animation. Enfin, le Libre Graphics Meeting 2010 tentera d'impliquer un nombre plus important d'artistes et d'universitaires pour montrer des usages nouveaux des logiciels graphiques, débattre, analyser et échanger des idées inspirantes.

Gebruikers en ontwikkelaars van Free, Libre en Open Source graphics software ontmoeten elkaar op 26-29 mei 2010 in Brussel, België tijdens de vijfde jaarlijkse Libre Graphics Meeting (LGM). Het evenement vindt plaats in het centrum van Brussel in een historische pianofabriek, onlangs gerenoveerd tot een levendige expositie- en werkruimte. LGM 2010 biedt software-ontwikkelaars, kunstenaars, ontwerpers en andere grafische professionals de kans om samen te werken en van elkaar leren. LGM legt de nadruk op gedeelde collectieve creativiteit, innovatie en ideeën en is gratis bij te wonen voor iedereen. Over de Libre Graphics Meeting
De Libre Graphics Meeting wordt georganiseerd om de verschillende inspanningen achter Free, Libre en Open Source creatieve software met elkaar te verbinden, en te versnellen. Sinds 2006 is deze jaarlijkse bijeenkomst de belangrijkste conferentie voor ontwikkelaars, gebruikers en ondersteuners van projecten zoals GIMP, Inkscape, Blender, Krita, Scribus, Hugin, de Open Clipart Library en de Open Font Library. Tijdens LGM wordt gewerkt aan interoperabiliteit, open standaarden en nieuwe ideeën. De laatste Libre Graphics Meeting vond plaats in Montreal, Canada. Meer dan 150 deelnemers uit de hele wereld kwamen vier dagen bijelkaar om presentaties en demo's te geven en samen te werken in informeel verband. Door de steun van de École Polytechnique Montreal, de LGM gemeenschap (fondsenwerving op pledgie.com), Sourceforge, River Valley Technologies, Intel Communities, Open Candy, QT, sK1, GIMP, Python Software Foundation, Gnome foundation en Group Eyrolles, konden vele internationale ontwikkelaars samen worden gebracht die anders enkel in staat zouden zijn om op afstand te werken. Hoogtepunten waren bijdragen van bedrijven die dankzij Open Source bestaan, zoals zoals AscenderCorp en Open Source Publishing, en presentaties van Jeff Fortin's PiTiVi Video Editor, FontMatrix, Phatch en Michael Terry's in-Gimp, een project dat gebruikerservaringen analyseert. Alle belangrijke F/LOSS projecten zoals Scribus, Gimp, Inkscape, en Open Font Library, werkten aan een gezamenlijke planning voor het volgende jaar. Een vooruitblik op LGM 2010
Voor de Libre Graphics Meeting 2010 dagen de initiatiefnemers alle deelnemende mensen en projecten uit doelen te stellen en creatieve projecten te plannen. Ten eerste wordt elk groot project gevraagd drie prioriteiten vast te leggen met de conferentie als deadline. Ten tweede is het de bedoeling één of meer gezamenlijke projecten te ontwikkelen zoals een boek of een animatie (dus niet alleen de software zelf). Ten derde hoopt de conferentie een toenemend aantal kunstenaars en academici te betrekken om nieuwe toepassingen van vrije grafische software te demonstreren en te bediscussiëren, analyseren en inspireren.
